Most predators have binocular vision (e.g. "This so-called binocular vision helps them to better see depth, an adaptation to hunting for their food. Their stern look is exacerbated by the fact that they have both eyes positioned in the front of their head, unlike most other birds, which have eyes on the sides of their heads. Also, to process the slippery fish, they have a hook at the top of their bill, like many other fish eating birds (e.g. "Only few other species manage to eat catfish crocodiles and fish eagles for example. Stock image of a shoebill eating its prey. This allows them to swallow their prey in one piece, as they do not chew their food. To be able to catch and swallow large fish, the shoebill needs a large gape, hence the terrifying widening of their bill at the base. Herons, egrets and storks for example, forage on smaller species, with different techniques." "The shoebill is one of the few species that has adapted to the larger prey species. "As in all species, the appearance of the shoebill is a result of natural selection and evolution," Mullers said. Other species within this order include the pelicans, which are more distantly related to the shoebills, as well as hammerkop, ibises, spoonbills, herons, egrets and bitterns. They are alone in their evolutionary family, with their closest living relatives being the Pelecaniformes order, which emerged around 65 million years ago, towards the end of the Cretaceous period. Shoebills, despite often being called shoebill storks, are not actually storks at all. Although solitary, they are very territorial, and ours didn't particularly like any strange keeper (other than his preferred one) trying to feed him, and would angrily chase them with open beak and flapping wings," Lee Hagey, an animal molecular biologist at the University of California, San Diego, told Newsweek. "The San Diego Zoo's wild animal park had one for many years who stood tall and unmoving on a little island near a restaurant for public viewing. Their usual fare includes several species of lungfish, Tilapia species, and catfish, as well as occasional frogs, lizards, water snakes, baby crocodiles and even rodents and smaller waterfowl. Unnoticed by their unlucky victim, the shoebill will then lunge onto the prey in a hunting technique called "collapsing," as described by National Geographic. Shoebills hunt by staying very still, keeping a watchful eye out for any prey. Stock image of a shoebill showing its massive wingspan. As mentioned above, the shoebill specializes in large prey, so they co-evolved themselves as well, becoming larger and larger. also, for moving in higher vegetation, and through reeds and papyrus, long legs are very helpful. Also, long thin legs could look like reeds, a strategy to trick prey into moving closer. "With long legs it allows the species to move into deeper water, thus avoiding competition with other species. "They have long legs, because like for example storks and herons, they sometimes wade through water to catch their prey," Ralf Mullers, an ecology lecturer at Van Hall Larenstein in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands, told Newsweek. They are found across the swamps of tropical East Africa, ranging between South Sudan to Zambia. When their wings are fully extended, they can measure up to eight feet across. They stand between 3.5 and 5 feet tall, weigh between 11 and 13 pounds, and can live for up to 50 years in captivity. However, as other posters have recommended, there are many alternative PDF apps. So, when creating a PDF (ideally using Adobe InDesign or Acrobat, but if other software or hacking is needed that's fine. If there is any significant voltage on that wire then there is a short to voltage somewhere. If you don’t detect any frequency signal from the PCM on the ignition coil driver circuit indicating the PCM is grounding/ungrounding the circuit (or there is no visible pattern on the scope if you have one) then leave the coil disconnected and check for DC voltage on the driver circuit at the ignition coil connector. If there is a Hertz signal, then replace the #3 ignition coil. Use a Voltmeter in AC Hertz scale and see if there’s a Hz reading of between 5 and 20 or so that indicates the driver is working. It was pretty basic to add the base rock, sprinkle with water, and compact. The shipment included large, sturdy zip-ties to attach panels together so that is an option to try. Because we are adding another panel, I wanted to wait. Originally, I was going to make a frame for the whole thing, but then held off waiting to see how it would hold up once base rock was added and compacted. I cut off the extra with a circular saw, no way a razor blade or scissors can cut through this material. It was wider than the space so I had to spend time lining it up and figuring out where to cut. It was very difficult as the mesh is super strong and durable. Then, I pulled apart the mesh grid and attached it with screws into the 4×4. The two side pieces could be thinner because the horses don’t walk that close to the edges. I used a 4×4 on the top because it had to be thick for the horses to step on. On Lighthoof’s website, pictures show people using stakes to hold it in place as gravel is filled in, but I didn’t want to put holes in the filter fabric. I wanted to make a frame for the expandable mesh because I felt like the top had to be attached to wood in order to extend it out. This fence gave me two 10′ 2x4s and a 7′ 4×4 which was helpful, but not enough, so I still ended up getting a few at the store, I need a 12′ board. I also ordered 4 yards of base rock and filter fabric from our local Central Home Supply in Santa Cruz. I ordered two panels (8′ x 12′ each), and they arrived very quickly so we could get started. I finally found the mud grid by Lighthoof Equine Mud Management “Thin-walled, flexible plastic ground stabilization grid panels support and protect the footing in horse paddocks, gate areas, and pathways.” I did some research and discovered many web sites with hard plastic interlocking squares. This fabric is an excellent solution for keeping your sub-base and surface gravel layers separated from the sub-grade level that will significantly reduce forming of potholes and ruts. When discussing the plans with Shasta’s horse trainer, Maddie, she told me about an expandable grid she saw on Instagram that supposedly solves equine mud problems. If your sub-grade was properly prepared but your driveway is deteriorating, you might want to place down a layer of geotextileĭriveway fabric on top of the sub-grade layer and then place down the gravel. The top layer of gravel should be placed only after the sub-grade and sub-base are in place and compacted. Then, put down a 4-inch layer of coarse gravel on top of the compacted sub-grade layer. The best solution for a stable driveway will include digging 8 to 12 inches below the surface of the driveway, the removal of roots and other plants and then compact the soil with a plate compactor or roller to create the sub-base. ![]() Therefore, you must properly prepare the bed for the gravel. The difference between the gold medal and silver medal in the men’s singles luge at the 2018 Winter Olympics was just 0.026 seconds. Final times are calculated by adding four runs together. Most tracks are around a mile long (1.6 km), and the athletes cover that distance in just under a minute. Though bobsled, luge and skeleton may look easy, in reality they are anything but. When athletes enter a turn at 80 mph (129 kph) they experience accelerations that can reach five times that of normal gravitational acceleration. Racers are dealing with a lot of kinetic energy and strong forces. Both gravitational potential energy and kinetic energy increase as weight increases, meaning there is more energy in a four-person bobsled team than there is in a one-person luge or skeleton for a given speed. The reason a flying baseball will shatter the glass if it hits a window is that the ball transfers its kinetic energy to the glass. The potential energy is converted to another form of energy once the object starts falling. Gravitational potential energy represents stored energy and increases as an object is raised farther from Earth’s surface. Riders in the sledding events reach their fast speeds because of the conversion of gravitational potential energy into kinetic energy. The track is roughly a mile long (1.6 km), drops 397 feet of elevation (121 meters) – with the steepest section being an incredible 18% grade – and comprises 16 curves. ![]() This year’s races are taking place at the Yanqing National Sliding Center. The big-picture physics is simple – start at some height and then fall to a lower height, letting gravity accelerate athletes to speeds approaching 90 mph (145 kph). Gravity is what powers the sleds down the ice-covered tracks in bobsled, luge and skeleton events. ![]() |
